Jeez when did Twitter become a bloody mortuary? I think I may have followed far too many suicidal tweens or teens. I say tweens as I have just been chatting to a rather extraordinarily good writer who informed she was 12.

I am sad and somewhat worried at the amount of young girls who take to Twitter to tweet about their suicide attempts and how they are starving their bodies so they look amazing

Rain check

This is Twitter right? A social media site to make connections, friends? Not tell the world about how you intend to kill yourself

OK OK I get the whole I need support and yes I get how crap you feel when depressed but is there any need to post things like this?

A 12 year old girl posting a picture of shocking collar bones with the line of – I need her collar bones? No love what you need is your parents to take more notice of what your doing online.

Is this girl actually 12? I doubt it to be fair after she sent me a rather “telling off” to my direct message box; which you can view further down ( I have covered the users name). If she is 12 then her English test papers sure are giving her an A* this year.

The point is Twitter has become a Topping Ground

If your feeling down and suffering from depression, please think twice about who you follow on Twitter. I also worryingly see Twitter accounts that have a Bio offering support, yet the tweets are all self centred around the Tweeter and how they want to end their lives

WOW

Can you imagine feeling so low that you turn on Twitter as a last resort to finding someone to talk too and you come across this kind of support?

Go on bite my head off … Everyone needs to let of steam and have a moan

Yes I agree they do and you will often see me personally tweet about my own mental health but come on do you really need to ask 4/5 a day, 7 days a week “If I killed myself tonight would you miss me?”

The best people to talk too when you feel worthless, useless and so alone are those that have felt that way too or know about mental health matters. But to support someone who may well be thinking of suicide, you must be in the correct state of mind yourself.

Twitter can provide an amazing support network, it can also send some over the edge

If you need support then firstly please speak out to real life family and friends you can trust who can help you seek professional health from professionals before turning to Twitter

There are some great resources and support on Twitter, so search direct for those who are trained or can help you cope with how you are feeling, steer clear of those who actively promote suicide, eating disorders as the next best thing or those offering to help you, yet only talk about how crap they are feeling.

When your down and struggling you need to surround yourself with people who can relate to you, yet are able to stay positive and actually steer you in the right direction.

  2. If she truly was using twitter as a source of support, surely she wouldn’t be posting pictures like that and saying she wanted her collar bones? Wouldn’t she be posting inspiring pictures to try and inspire herself and other people to over come their eating disorders?

See thats my problem, why post such pictures that will only gain negative responses unless for attention …

How sad. Looks to me as She is craving attention but going about it all the wrong way. Twitter and pictures like that aren’t going to do her any good. X

  5. Dude I dunno, this is a tricky one.
Twitter is a huge, massive, living and breathing thing. People use it in so many different ways for so many different reasons.

All of the thinspo stuff terrifies me but I am also well aware of its existence. It’s out there and it’s people sharing something because that’s what they want to do. Frankly I have seen worse things shared on Twitter, from offensive tweets to photos and images to the downright sickening and illegal.

My personal belief is that Twitter is an amazing tool to connect with like minded people and people use that to different ends.

Your example above, taken on face value as a 12 year old tweeting an image, she is sharing something that she wants to share. She is sharing something that no doubt countless other people think and feel. Of course it’s not what you would want anyone to think but then part of me feels glad that at least she is doing so in a public area – ie not on closed proana forums where it would be met with 100% encouragement – where there is a chance, a slim chance, that someone could see it and act on it and provide support.

Is replying in the way in which you did not akin to when someone tells someone who is clinically depressed to ‘pull themselves together’?

To you it may be wrong but to whoever the Tweeter is its real and it’s something and all that Tweet could ever lead to is defensiveness and bad feeling.

People turn to things for different reasons, offer support in different ways and make their own way un whatever and I think to make such sweeping generalisations is a shame.

Especially when so many of your own posts are provocative, triggering, graphic and at times contain shocking images, themselves with absolutely no warning of their contents.

We all need to be responsible and comfortable with our own actions, that’s all that we can do.

  7. i think shes craving attention not only that but yet again tv/mags ect show the ‘idle’ female whos thin n showing bones n i’m saddened to say young teens see this n want to be like the pictures n b size 0′s , i feel sorry 4 her thinking twitter is her only support network n that she can only use twitter as her outlet at such a young age :( i feel sorry n sad 4 her n other like her xx

The world we live i is getting increasingly more disturbing! This and the cutforbeiber sh*t. What the hell is going. They all seem to be pretty young too. How are their parents allowing this? How is Twitter allowing this? Something is seriously wrong with this world and it needs to stop, this is not the way forward, this is not the right way to behave. If it’s attention seeking then they need to f*ck off and realise it’s not ‘cool’ or whatever else. If it’s a serious problem then they need help! – sorry for the bad language just really annoyed with all these things going on lately, no need for them!

  9. Kate Foley says:

I saw this :( I really wish these people could go and get the help they need at such a young age x

  10. Laura Lane says:

for the sake of a 12 year old girl, i seriously hope she isnt really 12. its awful to think someone that age could be thinking in that way. x

  11. Poor girl, if she is 12 is she even allowed on twitter? and if so shouldnt her parents be keeping an eye on it? maybe she craving attention

  12. I’m shocked to see a girl of age 12 put a pic of that and write what she did! I think a lot of girls around that age like attention so she might be doing it because of that. Also agree that mags are all girls that are mega skinny may-b they should start putting pictures of curvyer girls in the mags so the young girl that read them won’t feel the presure to look so slim xx

  13. This is so so sad! I really hope she isn’t 12. How awful x
