Can my doctor refuse me an abortion?

ID 100102387 Can my doctor refuse me an abortion?

Can my doctor refuse me an abortion? Is a common question and often frightens women who need to ask for professional medical help.

Your doctor can not refuse you an abortion but they can refuse to personally help you if they are against abortions.

If your doctor does refuse to help you, they have a professional duty to refer you onto another doctor who will help.

The General Medical Council’s Duties of a Doctor says that doctors must make sure that their “personal beliefs do not prejudice patient care”.

If you are entitled to NHS care, you’re GP or family planning clinic can refer you for a free termination on the NHS.

What was said above is what I was going to say. I think we found the same article too:

A doctor or nurse has the right to refuse to take part in abortion on the grounds of conscience, but he or she should always refer you to another doctor or nurse who will help. The General Medical Council’s Duties of a Doctor says that doctors must make sure that their “personal beliefs do not prejudice patient care”. The Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Code of Conduct provides similar guidance to nurses.

Whilst most GPs follow professional guidelines, some do unfairly obstruct women accessing an abortion. If you are not happy with the level of support from your GP you can attend your local family planning or sexual health clinic instead. If they think you are i

Personally I am against abortions but would stand by anyone who chooses to have one for the right reasons, I think as long as the right reasons are there a doctor should not refuse you one either x

I now they can talk you out of it or if they think your not in the right frame of mind they can refuse it. But if you are adament that’s what you want I think that there are ways around it xx

i know if i was a doctor that was against abortion i would find it very hard to refer someone on. but they have a duty of care to make sure their patient is looked after and sees someone that can help them. doctors should always be supportive. but sadly they are not always. x

  10. Laura ovington says:

I don’t think they can refuse after all it’s your body your baby but they can advise you on it and make you think about it xx

  11. I wouldn’t of thought that they could say “you can’t have one” there , there to help you. Its your choice on what you wanna do so they will have to help in some way, they might tell u to take a few days to think about it but don’t think they will say no xx

  12. doctors can refuse if they think u wont be able to cope with it after but they cant stop u having one xxx

  13. Emma Stephen says:

I don’t think so, but u do have to answer some questions before its booked in x
