I have just stumbled upon an article about dummies and as I seriously struggled to take the dummy off my two I had a read. It was advising parents how we should sterilise our baby’s dummies to get rid of all those nasty germs and yes I did for the first few weeks.
After the first month it became more of a lazy habit, if the dummy dropped onto the floor I would;
a- Dip it in my hot cup of tea (the boiling water was good to clean it right?)
b- Stick it in my mouth to suck it clean
I also had no idea that you are meant to give baby a clean dummy every few hours. This is something I never did with any of mine. They had the same one all day, then during the night, then even possibly the following day.
I was also a mum who would shove that dummy in their mouth if they were whining. Instead of trying to figure out what was wrong with them, in the dummy would go. They were a god send.
I loved the dummy more than the kids did and yes it was at the grand old age of almost 4 when I decided that the dummy had to go, only because my daughter was due to start school and I was starting to see the disapproving looks that other mothers gave me when they saw my 3 year old had a dummy stuck in her mouth.
Bother her and her brother 11 months younger had to be stripped of their prized possession and I grieved for the loss too. Now I have no quick and easy way to shut them up!
I would love to hear if you cared for your dummy? I guess I failed at this task …

i atualy found very easy to cope without the dummies i took them before my kids turned 12 months and my eldest cried for afew days then my youngst wasnt fussed at all after afew hours, at times iv wished i still had a dummy for my youngest but wont give it him back xx
Well all I can say is the kids whos parents do this sort of thig, suckin it clean or dippin in tea, not givin a clean one etc, these kids have fab immune systems! You can be too clean now and thats when they dont get immune and fall illl all the time. So I personally dont think there is anythin wrong with it lol. But I havnt done it coz my 4 didnt have dummies, have to admit theres nothin worse than seein a big kid with a dummy in public, but then there may be a reason for it, invisible illnesses etc. xxxx
Please tell me I am NOT the only mum to do this with dummies – http://t.co/3LsmUIrJ #mumfail
as soon as Lewis walks out of perschool he goes ‘mummie dummy’ n yes i give him it if its in my pocket or wait till we get to the bustop if its in the bottom of his bag, he was 3 in aug but he still has his when hes tired or upset its the frist thing i do is ‘put bung in hole’ to shh him , so yep i’m same as u…… as new born they had 3 dummys one that went in the sterliser in the morning n a fresh one give n the 3rd was a spare while out or if i couldn’t find the one in use, i to sucked it or ran it under a kettle to clean it when not sterlised ie dropped ect xx
ooppps i did/do the stick it in my mouth to clean thing aswel :/ eekk i do get a clean dummy every few hours tho, all of them are in the sterilser too..reanne had hers till she was about 3, and it was only for the nights from about 2 1/2…i refused to let her walk about with it stuck in her mouth lol..if she waspoorly id let her have it in the day mind..iv given kaydi one but this time il try to get her off it sooner, depending how she is with it xx
I bever knew u should give them a clean dummy every 4 hrs wooops… N lil man had one as he was un settled with his reflux n i fpund a dummy helped him his nw 17 mobths n only time he has a dummy nw is nap time n at night xxx
Now I feel bad!! I breast fed both my babies and the dummy was a nipple shield for me!! My son is now 4,5 in January and he still uses it at night to fall asleep and I have tried to take it off him but he just can’t settle without it! Am I a bad mummy?? xx
No you not lol x
I did exactly the same the amount of times caitlan threw her dummy and then screamed for it so I sucked it and gave it back to her the amount of dissaproving looks but if I left her to scream I’d get the same dissaproving looks lol you can never win now a days I don’t agree with just giving it straight back though without doing anything to it which I see some people do xx
Its common I can’t really comment as Grace got rid of her dummy for a blanket at 3 months as she just stopped taking it x until recently pooh bear (blanket) would go everywhere xx
my first didnt have a dummy she didnt like them, my second loved her dummys 3 and 4 in her hand at a time i stealised them for the first month then just stopped for some reason. i used to shove the dummy in to shut her up lol she was a very mardy baby still is at 2 shes been without a dummy for 6 days now i didnt take them off her she just settled 3 days without them then i threw them in the bin the other day, she has found a few dummys what iv not seen for months but there now in the bin too
just the night time bottle to get rid of
Well i must have been a bad mummy, I stopped sterlising dummys after 3 months, they pick rubbish up and suck on toys that are not sterlie, yes i sucked a dummy if it feel on the floor and guess what
My kids rarely had colds LOL
But is what you did such a failure? I don’t know that it is. They have survived – and so have you!
my kids took them selfs off of dummys at 6 weeks old, dont feel bad they will come off of dummys when there ready x
Auron has a dummy.. ididnt know you were meant to give them a clean one every 4 hours either lol! obviously when he was little if it fell on the floor id wash it , but now that he is walking around and picking things up i dont x
I’m lucky my lil girl only had het dummy for 3 days when she was 2 week old then she stopped using it xx
my little girl had hers till last christmas we out all of them in a bag and under the tree for santa to give to all the boys and girls that had none. i tried taking it off her but never worked until then! x
My eldest only had a dummy for 3 months then he didn’t want it anymore my little girl had hers a matter of days before she refused to take it again and my youngest has never had a a dummy sometime I really wish he would tho as he cries for no real reason I think it might shush him lol
my mum really struggled tho as my little sister had dummy’s up to the age of 12 mum would throw them away she would always find one tho she has PDA so the more she was told no the more she did it lol x
my daughter never had a dummy… i had a dummy till i was 3 and i dont like children walking round with dummies in there mouths…. so i refused to give her one….. then one night she had terrible colic and i was so tired it was 1 in the morning and id had no sleep and couldnt settle her so i gave in and gave her a dummy….. and she didnt even want it lol… so still dummy free….. Kiera has a bottle for comfort which she has before bed at night and that is what sends her off to sleep… its far easier to take the bottle off her than if she had a dummy so i dont mind x
If dylan wants a dummy who is 3, he will look for one, so this is a great post, as i dont give them to him anymore, doesnt help when his brother has them though x x
I need to get my 2 yr old off the dummy, wish me luck x
I’ve been quite lucky as my LO didn’t have a dummy so did have to manage with them lol cx
I’m with u on this 1 haha x
i spose im lucky my son never wanted one only had one for a few days to bring on his sucking reflex and then he wouldnt entertain one after that
I was the same “/ never hurt any of mine, I was lucky tho they both took themselves off the dummy x
I used to sterilize every day but not every 4 hours lol, I was lucky my 2 girls didn’t want them after a few weeks but finally got my son off them at 3 when I just got them all and said they were going to Santa and he hasn’t asked for one since xx
i stick it straight in my mouth and give it back lol
Both my children got themselves off the dummy at 6months
))
am trying to get my lg to give her dummys to tinkerbell but will try an see if she will give them santa xx
