Do kids get too much homework?

ID 10033407 Do kids get too much homework?

It’s that time of year for the children to return to school and I know my secondary school age child is half looking forward yet half dreading her return as her night time socialising is going to have to be put on hold, yes the dreaded homework is to return.

While I accept that some amount of homework is needed I believe there has to be the right balance? I too have had to give up evenings to help with homework; it can become very frustrating when she has been given 3-4 assignments that need to be done within a certain number of days, as family trips and visits are cut short.

It can become a battle to get her to sit at the kitchen table; she wants to be out with friends or going for a hot soak in the bath. I forever hear myself saying “Is your homework finished, let me see”.

Do kids get too much homework?

I do remember having some homework myself when I was of school age, yet do not remember receiving the large amounts as my daughter does.

It can become close to ten in the evening and she is still sat researching, writing. This cannot be good for her sleep pattern, worrying of she got the answers right, wrote enough.

  1. My 9 year old gets at least 6 to 10 things every night depending on her teacher’s mood. It’s riculous.

  2. It’s crazy! My daughter’s only 19 months so she’s not at school yet but when I was only a few years ago I would be getting homework from every lesson (5 a day) and most had to be done either the next day or a few days after. Then once the lesson would roll round again… more homework! I wouldn’t have minded but kids need to be kids, if the homework is that important that it needs to be done immediately then it should be incorporated in the lesson x

  3. My kids school i dont thjnk they have enough reading book and spellings last year was all i hope this year she has more and will see about my son just starting reception xx

When I was at school I got a piece for every lesson (had 5 a day) and they were always due in either the day after or a few after, hand that in and get more again, I think there should be more reading, writing and maybe maths but other than that I don’t see the importance til they’re in high school at least. x

  5. when i was in school (5 lessons a day) atleast 2 of those a day, sometimes 3 we would be given an hours worth of homework, some due in a few days, some due the next week. i didnt even do all of my homework, or alot of the time would have it late and found it wayyyy too much. and stressful. i cant imagine what its going to be like when my boy starts secondary. at the moment he gets a reading book every day to read and then write about it (this can include describing the relationships between the characters, what changes they would have made to the book, how they could make it more exciting etc) and then an extra on weekends, sometimes i just dont have the time in the day to get it done and i feel like im letting him down

  6. My sons only 5 but he gets 1 piece a week on a Friday and has to be returned on a Wednesday x

  7. Jessica Markham says:

My children arent at school yet, but when i was at school a few years back i hardly got any homework x x

  8. Amber is 7 and get 1 piece of maths,1 piece of writing,a book to read & 4 words to learn. I don’t think thats too much for her. But secondary school yes they get tons x

  9. i dont think they should get homework, time at school is for studying and learning, they are there long enough each day, time at home should be spent with the family

    • I absolutely agree. my 12 yr old son is dreading going back to school. He is often up to 10 or 11pm doing his homework even with my help. i am looking for a school that keeps teaching to the classroom and allows the children to relax out of school! A child being in a state of anxiety because of feeling overwhelmed by homework isn’t condusive to their learning.
My friend who is a teacher gave his students the choice of either homework or extra tests in class to evaluate how much they had learnt from his lessons. They chose tests in class!
I think that homework should be an option to opt in to and not a priority.

  10. all depends on the age, capability of the child. sounds strange but my homework was always better than my school work as i didnt have a teacher breathing down my neck or telling me not to chew gum or what not i loved it and if it shows my sons do better at home then at school then i will explain this to them too. im dreading the convo when they come down at 9pm saying ive got a project that needs doing by morning!!! arghhhh

schools have always given too much home work out kids need time to relax and wind down not have to sit in all night at a desk after sitting at a desk all day

  12. My 6 and 4 year old get none except a book to read! They will probably start getting it soon then x

  13. iv no idea aint got my kids to that stage yet…my eldest is only in reception lol

  14. shorna wilson says:

my sons 7 and the only homework he has is maths and english 1 day a week

  15. yeah i think so, it puts too much stress on em

  16. 10 minutes per grade per night is plenty, I think.

  17. Oh god yes
