A Black Women Feeding A White Baby; The Problem Is?

The Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani , who served as creative director for Benetton between the years of 1982 – 2000, not only transformed the Italian clothier into a household name; he changed the face of advertising.

Benetton’s 1989 campaign for equality between black and white caused a strong reaction across North America, but it was an image of a black woman breastfeeding a white baby that stood out from the rest of the ad campaign. The photograph not only generated controversy, it also became the most-awarded image in Benetton’s advertising history.

There is something very beautiful about this picture and its my favourite breastfeeding picture to date. I also see no debate topic on it? I see a mother feeding her baby? As a mother I would have been proud for my own baby to pose for this shoot.

Why did this picture cause so much controversy?

  1. I see nothing wrong with this photograph either.

  2. As long as the child is being looked after, who cares?

  3. It’s just a picture. The picture is about equality. And acceptance. The white child accepts the black mothers breastmilk. An innocent child has no idea about controversy and racism. I think it’s beautiful. X

absolutely gorgeous picture, the face of equality and I would have been honoured if it was my baby. I mean some babies who cant be fed by their mother receive breast milk from others, how do u always know who/where it comes from. Its just such a natural thing, and absolutely beautiful x
