Kody our 2 year old no longer will go into his highchair and he wants to be a big boy and sit at the kitchen table. Much to my refusal he always wins. I much prefer he uses the high chair as I know one he is safe and two he creates a mess in an easy to wipe down tray.
When Do You Stop Using A Highchair?
I don’t think there is a certain age when your child has to stop using a high chair. I believe it is more down to each individual child. While some are more than happy to be strapped in, others detest this and would much rather sit elsewhere.
Some mothers have told me that they started to use booster seats, safe little seats that are secured to a normal chair so their child was able to join them at the kitchen table.
I do find that when the children sit at the table with the family they do eat more and of course are able to get more involved with the conversations. Meal times are a very important time as a family so I think it’s nice that the younger members can join in.
Ditching the highchair has been a battle, but I have to accept at the age of 2 Kody is no longer a baby and wants his independence and more chance to grow and follow his older siblings. He does have to sit on his knees as he can barely reach the table sitting and does not like the booster seat idea.
If you do not like the idea of them sitting at the table just yet, you can use a booster seat designed for little bottoms, you can purchase smaller children table and chair sets or do what we do some days and place a large fleece blanket on the floor for them to all sit on, trust me it catches all the mess.
When did you stop using a highchair and why?

With my first she was 3 my second was 2 and my 3rd was 3. Freddie my 4th is 2 next week and still uses one but am thinkin of getting him a booster
My lg had one of those high chairs that can become a chair and table. I took the tray off the chair and she would sit at the table in the highchair up till she was about 22 months. Or she would sit in it as a table and chair. Think its each to there own as to what age the child stops sitting in a highchair. Depends on the size of the child as well. X
My lg is almost 2 1/2 and still occasionally uses her high chair. She prefers to sit with a towel over her lap with her plate on that. We dont have room for a dining table in our new house but if we did id hve her sat at that cz she tends to eat more x
Grace stopped going in her highchair at 2 as she eould get out no matter what. Xx
Rileys 20 months and hasnt used his booster chair in months. He prefers to sit next to his big brother at te table x
Summer is 23months ans stil in her high chair. It’s got a removable tray so it pulls right up to the table which is nice, as she is short and won’t reach on a chair. She sits on a booster at my mums and if were out she will usually sit on the ‘big girl chair’ haha. Xx
I want my daughter Tamara to use hers for aslong as she wants, and when the time comes she will join us at the table xx
I wish I could ditch the highchair for Zach but he’s not good at eating outside of it he just wants to play
My eldest was nearly 3 before he would sit at the table, my youngest was fighting to get out the the time he was 18 months, I think you need to take the lead from your child and if your furniture and sensibilities can take the mess x
My LG has only recently turned 1 and so far seems quite happy in her high chair. Ive thought about what to do next, and I would like to get a drop leaf table and fold away chairs so we can sit and eat together, either using her high chair that has a removeable tray, or get a booster steat. When we’re out she uses high chairs or ive got her a mamas and papas snug (like a bumbo but is suitable for toddlers too) and she quite likes using that if we go to friends and ive not been able to pick up the travel high chair from my mum.
reanne were about 2 as she would scream until she came out or just throw her plate on the floor because she was in there.. and she sat nicely..most of the time.. at the table xx
My son was 2 in may and I have taken the tray off his highchair and he has it pushed up to the table so he can eat with us all.
Adjusted the height setting so he’s just tall enough at the table and it definitely has made a difference in how meal times work. Its now a family meal rather than an adults meal and then a baby meal. X x
My 1st was out of a hug chair very early and used to sit at a small table and chair my 2nd is 17 months and sometimes sit in high chair or at the table depends in his mood lol x
iv had a fight on my hands to get Abbie now 20 months in her high chair for months… she insists on sitting at the table, i think you just have to follow what changes your child is telling you its time to make and encourage their new steeping stone xxx
my son was 2 when i got him a wooden table and chairs, my daughter is 15 months but will be in there alot longer than he was x
caitlan wouldnt go in a highchair before her 1st birthday as at nursery the high chairs where tiny and closer to the floor think she was bit worried at be high up so i bought a booster seat and sat it on the floor for her before her 2nd birthday we ditched this too as she wanted to be at the table sometimes if we go out though i put her in highchair in cafes ect just so i know shes in one place and i aint gunna spend ages running round after her lol she doesnt mind when we are out and about tho and sometimes asks to go in one xx
jaydens still in his high chair at 17 months, will be using a booster seat when hes a little older as i feel its important for them too sit at the table and join in with family meals xx
i stopped using the highchair when abigail used it as a climbing frame so we got her a little table and chairs she loves it she does everything on that table best thing i every bought i would recommend if you dont have room for a family table x
i stopped using a highchair when they got a bit big for it between 18-24 months and i knew they would be safe sitting on a chair at the table xx
we bought ellie a little table n chair sahe loves it and now will want to sit at tht n not in highchair
Mine came out quite early, because it got on my nerves tripping over it in kitchen, bought a little wooden table and chaire for the 2 little people to sit at and it worked well.x
We stopped when our son got too big for it, and was trying to climb out! Probably about 2 I think. He did sit really well at the table too x
coleys 18 months and eats lunch on the sofa watching telly but has to eat her dinner in her high chair, think its more because we all sit to the table, might have to invest in ones of those booster seats though and she how she goes in that cause she keeps trying to grab things off our plates on the table and puts her juice on there and place when shes finished with them x
think its important to realize when you take them out of the high chair they sit at the table so they learn good habits but i think they let you know when the time is right xx
My youngest is 21 months now and we havnt used a high chair for about 2 months he prefers to sit at the table x
when reanne was 2, she screamed and screamed when i put her in then would throw her plate on the floor x
both my lgs were 1 when we stopped using the highchair ther grandparents bought them a lovely little table from ikea and they love it they sit and eat their dinner play and have even fell to sleep at the table lol xx
My eldest was 2 then started using a chair with a built in table my youngest is now 16month and has been out of it since he was one and is now in the chair my eldest was in and my eldest now has a chair and table unless we’re eating at the table xx
My daughter stopped using hers at 2 ithink?…
She wanted to be a big girl and sit with mummy and daddy xx
