I Am A Horrid Mother Because I Don’t Bake With My Kids

The Last Time I Baked Was 3 Months Ago

I don’t make biscuits and I certainly don’t make pretty little cakes with my kids. The simplest way of baking with 6 kids is to buy the biscuits and cakes from the supermarket and pretend I made them when they were at school.

Have you ever tried to bake with 6 kids?

12 grubby and germ infected little hands touching the ingredients that I have no desire to eat.

Yes I am a horrid mother because I don’t bake with my kids but so what, am I damaging them in some way?

OK so I do bake with my kids, maybe once every 3 months if they are lucky but I can’t make biscuits and cakes, yes it’s the truth, I cheat and buy the pre made packet mixes, hey it’s just as good.

I do have friends who like to bake and can make cakes and when they come to visit the kids always beg them to make cakes; it’s a great way for the kids to learn social skills I think so I always welcome it.

We have the kitchen a mess in no time and it takes twice as long to make the damn things as it does for them to eat them all.

Surely my kids will remember the time mum jumped up and down on the trampoline and her bladder was so weak that she wet herself memory, which they found hilarious,  more than not making cakes with mum?

I follow lots of blogs and many are written by pretty mothers who write about pretty things, like making pretty little cakes. The truth is there is nothing pretty about me and I would rather go splashing in muddy puddles with the kids, because the mess is kept outside then.

Mothers who show off beautiful pictures of cakes and biscuits, I swear they are shop bought really. I stick a cake in the oven and it never rises, comes out flat as a pancake.

I guess we all have our talents and baking is not one of mine.

Do you bake with your kids?

  1. Hell no!!! I can’t cook. And the mess!! God the mess… Nah. Thats what greggs are for. It’s the same with the mums who home cook every single meal I’m like how do you have the time, the patience?! I can barely put a frozen pizza in the oven without a child or three hanging off me…

I am so relieved to hear I am not the only one who don’t make cakes. I was starting to think I was the only one!! I can’t bake to save my life and if I do decide to make cakes its pre-packed stuff LOL. Even then the cakes come out rock solid and the icing like water. I would much rather go out buy ready made icing, a pack of biscuits and drag out the icing pen and decorate the biscuits its so much easier. Give me muddy puddles over a mixing bowl any day xx

  3. you are def not a bad mother for not making them, i dont make very often with my kids maybe 3 times a yr if that i do sometimes bake myself but when doing it with the kids they just dont listen, i do however by the mini ready made pizza bases, chop some bits up put puree in a bowl give em a base n a spoon each up the table n they create there own, not too much mess and they have fun making their own dinner they tend to eat it all too lol. atleast u get out there and play etc many kids prob prefer a muddy puddle to baking anyway x

  4. I only have 1 child at the moment and I don’t do baking much with her. I can’t afford to keep baking with her and my oh is latose intolerent so it costs even more to make everything with dairy free stuff. Also my oh used to be a pastry chef so there is always something we have done wrong. Its just too much hassle, I’d rather get the paints out n get messy that way. X

  5. I love making cakes, I was given a recipe which makes the perfect soft moist cakes (yum) but I dont do it every 3 months, maybe once a year or if there is a party at school etc I wouldn’t say you are a bad mum for it. I didn’t learn to bake until I went to school, my mum was too ill x

  6. CollaredSlave says:

i don’t think i’ll be baking with Chloe either, but i know she will with my mother in law as she makes wedding cakes etc! x

  7. Omg cant tell you how much I love this one. I have the five kids and I very rarely do anything like that for exactly the same reasons. Infact the last time we did my son touched the oven and burnt his fingers and now I am too scared to. let them near anything cooking wise. I dont mind the mess but I hate the clearing up it drives me nuts. We do stuff at xmas and birthdays.

Seeing mums who bake a lot, I get jealous. But with five pairs of hands its very stressfull. They all argue about who does what and theres fingers everywhere and its like omg seriously? I bake stuff when they are in bed so i only habe to deal with my oh wanting to nick the spoon or bowl etc. Its much more relaxing, fun even and the kids still get the cakes.

Ill join you in the horrid mothers club. Do we get badges? Lol

  8. looking back at my post i may need to join a spelling club first lol

  9. I didn’t bake with my two teens (primarily because I can’t bake to save my life and don’t enjoy it), but I do regret not doing that. You can stretch it out to keep them occupied for hours when you’re stuck in the house for whatever reason. With my nine year old (who’s a lot younger than his sibs) I try to get him involved more in the kitchen. It’s a good life skill to have when you think about it.
But no, with more than two kids at a time, there’s no way I’d have cooked or baked with them! I’m with you on that.

  10. I have just started baking mainly myself with a small amount of help from the kids as i felt bad for not doing it with them. i am no great baker and decoration is water icing and sprinkles or melted choc! i only started baking as i find it cheaper than buy 3 different cakes (my kids never want the same) xx

  11. i hate baking the most i do is rice crispie cakes or pre-made stuff once every so often x

  12. My lg has only just turned 1 and a friends eyes actually popped out when I said to her that no i’d not done any cooking with my lg. Was she for real?! It works for some but it def doesn’t work for me! Everything goes in my lg’s mouth – do I really want my lg eating handfuls of flour and lumps of butter and what’s not been eaten being thrown on the floor? Nope! I can just about deal with stones, leaves, bits of wood … I’ve trained her to spit into my hand. Quite disgusting, but amusing for anyone who’s watching. Perhaps when my lg’s older and I think she understands what mixing is and ive an oven that actually works to a high temperature and I have the space in my kitchen and I have plastic wrapped the whole of the kitchen so it looks like something from a forensic scene and is easily cleaned up, then maybe we will make some fancy creations … with her grubby germy fingers and give them to the ex to eat :-) Then perhaps we start a how to give the ex food poisoning club? hee hee x

  13. O my God! Thank you so much Emma and everyone else! I cannot stand the idea of the mess! I’m in near on break down mode at just the thoughts of it!
I do/did feel very bad about it until now! I’m so relived that I’m not the only ‘strange mom’ that doesnt bake! There’s cake in the shop, I buy that on special occasions!
I dont think I should be made feel bad by mother’s who put up pictures of them knitting and sewing and baking all with their children! I cant do any of that, well, I can knit just about, but I dont go round showing off about it!
They bake with their dad when he’s around or when they are at his house! They know mommy cannot bake! I make dinners and we go for walks and have movie nights and play and giggle. They wont suffer from me not baking!
Thank you girls so much for this post once again! This is why I love this group xxxxxxxx

  14. I can bake but i dont! My cousin swears she bakes with her 22mo but I struggle to find jobs for a 2yo to do x

  15. Are u joking !! Seriously I don’t bake with Kai he’s 15 months and in the future I’ll buy the box stuff I wouldn’t have a clue where to start… Lol x

  16. Kate Foley says:

Does it hell make u bad mum I don’t do it very often either x

  17. Kirsty Harley says:

Got to say I mis read the title lol I thought it said because I don’t bake my kids lol x

  18. fiona smith says:

i love to bake with the kids but i think it has just been passed down to me from my mum. doesnt make you a bad mother by any manner of means. there is probably many things alot of mums do that i wouldnt dream of doing with mine and vice versa, this is wat makes us individuals NOT bad xxx

  19. well I baked with mine and now do with my grandchildren. why? cos I enjoy it, I find it therapeutic but we dont do arts and crafts, or paint or glue, hate going near mud and puddles are the bane of my life. does that make me a bad mum/gran? No!! it justs makes me me and you you. I use my talents I make good cakes, no brilliant cakes, but give me a pen and paper and ask me to draw something it wont look like what you ask me to draw.

  20. I looove baking! Although we don’t do it very often we love it, And if we baked all the time the kids would get bored of it :-) xx

  21. zoe burke says:

i dont bake with caitlan very often and mainly buy packet mixes doesnt make us a bad a mum xx

  22. i rarely bake, i dont have the patience with 2 kids – let alone 6! lol x

  23. I love that this has been written with such funny honesty! I think there is real pressure on mums to bake with their kids these days. I do sometimes but like you its the shop brought mix’s! xxx

  24. i love baking only because my nana use to bake with me when i was younger my mum never baked ith ny 1 of her 5 kids and out of 5 kids its only me that bakes i just 2 go to my nana’s 2 times a week to learn to bake something new and then sleep at the weekend and go over what she learnt me though the week i bake with jessica but not everyone enjoys baking i do no some people who can’t touch the mixture but that still dosn’t make anyone of you a bad mum or horrible just cost you dont bake with them don’t mean they wont ever learn hugs xxx

  25. megan wissen says:
