I feel so embarrassed.  Has anyone ever had piles? External ones? My baby is 8months old and I got them from giving birth, I have used Anasol and they helped the irritation but they’re just there hanging out.  I’m so scared to go to doctors and I have just sat and cried all day, I am scared what will they do?

First of all there is no need to be embarrassed, the doctor will have seen it a hundred times and before and a simple visit to see your GP will get you the help that you need to get rid of these pesky things.

Although piles develop inside your anal canal, they can hang down from your anus. They are graded as follows.

First degree piles are swellings on the inside lining of your anal canal. They may bleed but can’t be seen from outside your anus.

Second degree piles are larger than first degree piles. They stick out of your anus when you have a bowel movement, but go back inside on their own afterwards.

Third degree piles hang down from your anus and only go back inside when you push them in.

Fourth degree piles permanently hang down from your anus and you can’t push them back in. They may become very swollen and painful if the blood inside them clots. Read Bupa’s excellent article

The doctor will possibly want to take a look and examine you but as you have had a baby its nothing as bad as that.

Please make an appointment first thing in the morning. Piles are very common and easily treatable.

There are a variety of lifestyle changes you can make to prevent them from returning and this can be changing your diet to a high fibre one, which will make your poo nice and soft, which will reduce the pressure when you’re pushing it out.

Also ensure you’re drinking plenty of fluids and cut out some of that caffeine.
