Me & Mum

I am Nakita and I am The Real Supermum’s thirteen year old daughter, I asked my mum if I could write a blog post for her about telling your parents that you’re gay at a young age.

I’m a lesbian and I am proud of who I am. It was very frightening to tell my parents that I was gay as it had been on my mind for a long time. My behaviour became really bad as I was so confused; my anger was really bad so I would take it out on mum and Matt and sometimes the kids. I have kissed 2 of my friends but they were NOT gay, that’s when I thought to myself “I kissed a girl and I liked it”.

I did not feel normal; a few months later I fell in love with one of my teachers. I tried not to show it I never had feelings like this with anyone, I never told mum about this. She did have an idea as I wrote who I loved on a piece of paper and she found it.

13 and gay – How Do You Tell Your Parents You’re Gay?

I felt horrible, it was so scary  and I was REALLY confused I would ask mum questions, like if I was gay how would you feel and would you hate me the answer would be no. One night I decided this is who I am so I wanted to tell mum and I did. She was stood making a cup of tea and I told her. She just looked at me and said “Yes I Know”. She hugged me and told me that she had known for a while.

Then she told Matt and my grandma, they were fine then Casey and Cam came in asking me if I was a lesbian. They are my younger brother and sister and I was scared how they would take it. But everyone has been great about it.

My Mum and Matt said we were not going to tell them at first until I had told my dad and that night I did, well I didn’t mum did, he was fine until he started asking my questions,  I didn’t like it but now I’m carrying on with my life being a 13 year old single gay girl.

I’m a very happy young teenager with a good amount of friends and I like to have a good laugh. I love to go out and mess around with my best friend Danni, we go everywhere together she is 2 years older than me but we have known each other for a LONG time.

My hobbies are:

  • Drawing
  • Football
  • Singing
  • Playing P3S games
  • Tennis
  • Running
  • Dancing
  • Reading

And eating chocolate.

I live with my mum and step dad and my 2 sisters & 3 brothers; it’s amazing, I’m so happy. I do have sleeping problems but I’m getting there.  I used to live with my dad until things went wrong then I moved back in with mum on the Wednesday 25th April and I’m very happy here.  I know I broke my mum’s heart when I went to live with my dad but it was my fault not mu mums. I was only away 7 weeks.

Being the oldest kid in the house is ok, it’s fun I love my brother and sisters to bits I do like to spend a lot of time on my own in my room watch telly and be on Facebook & twitter but when I’m not in my room or outside with mates I’m playing games with the baby 3.

Casey and I enjoy reading or looking for cool interesting things on the laptop. Cam and I enjoy playing tennis. Life has not been easy for me over the last year but it has been really worth it.

As you can see being gay and telling my parents has not been all that bad.

Me and mum are also being featured in The Sun’s newspaper Sunday magazine, we will be talking about this more in detail so be sure to buy it.

As long as ur happy that’s what any mother wants. Don’t get bogged down by lables, I believe sexualitys a very grey area, there are no straight, gay, bisexual people there are just people who go for certain people but given the opportunity I think many would experiment would others too but wouldn’t say they were bisexual. If you like girls you like girls but I don’t think that’s gay, you may one day like a man. Just stick with your courage to always be open and you’ll be happy.

  6. Well done nakita, your family must b so proud of u xx

Well done for being brave and telling your mum. My sister is a lesbian and she didn’t tell anyone until she was 18. I still love her to bits and nothings changed. It’s a shame she couldn’t tell us sooner. My best friend is also gay and he told me when he was 15. It wad incredibly tough for him and he was bullied at school about it but I’m proud of him and Tbh love him more for it as he can finally be himself :) well done nakita :) you should be proud of yourself :) x

You are very brave well done for being who you want to be. There’s so much pressure on people today to be a certain type of person. Why be something your not to please everyone else. People think more and respect others for being honist. Your mum must be very proud of you.

  19. Alys Jenkins says:

So brave for speaking out at such a young age. My best friend Danny didnt tell anyone he was gay until he was 23. He even went so far as having girlfriends to stop people guessing. he finally told me one night and once he saw how i was and how it didnt bother me in the slightest he went and told his parents. Best thing he did, but was gutted he waited so many years! Well done Nik, you’re an inspiration like your mum :’)

  20. Well Done Nakita…. such a lovely blog post. Im so glad that you managed to pluck up the courage to tell your family. Lots of people keep it to themselves and are very unhappy. Well done huni its so much nicer to know you have a great support network around you.

  33. Jade Tynan says:

Wow well done you. It must have been so hard for you but you have a loving supportive family. You are a very grown up young lady . My mum always knew she was gay but her parents didn’t agree so she ended up being in horrible relationships with men and trying to hide who she really was and said the only good thing out of it was having me and my sister. She came out about 10 years ago. I was shocked at first when she told me but as long as she was happy i was happy. She is such much happier now. I glad you could be open about it =) xx

  34. well done as long as your happy thats all that matters xxx

  35. thanks for sharing your story lovely, glad you shared with your family and didnt feel you had to keep it secret, hope you feel happy and confident in who you are, regardless of labels xx

  36. Aww bless you Hun :) being gay doesn’t make you any different from anyone else ! Soglad you told your parents and at a young age it only makes it worse for you the longer you leave it x x good luck in the future hunni

  37. inspirational young women :)

  38. Lianne Ramshaw says:

Good on you :D my brother is gay… he’s 19 now and very happily “out of the closet” but he was very scared about how people would react… i was the one to tell my mum for him as he was too worried…. shes very big in the church and thought it was just a phase at first…. but now she has come to terms with it…. Our dad however didnt take the news all that well and they are no longer on speaking terms….. Though he is much happier now he is not trying to live a lie :D xxx

  39. One word – amazing! You are a beautiful girl and a credit to your mum who is also an amazin person. I want my kids to grow up knowing they can tell me anything and I honestly wudnt care if they are gay, tbh gay people are the best. xxx

  40. Zoe Bunney says:

Oh honey you are perfectly normal. When I was your age 1and saying that makes me feel so old!) I had crushes on women and found other women attractive. I was never told what a gay or bisexual was and I thought I was ill, very ill and got so scared I self harmed because of it. It was one of my older friends that told me it was perfectly normal to feel this way. You are so lucky to have such a supportive family and a mum you can turn to whenever you need her. And as for running away from your mum, it’s a teenage thing sweet, I used to tell my mum to f*** off and rot in hell,we’ve all been through the bad patches hun x

  41. wow!!! inspirational, well done hunny for being so strong, courageous and adult about your life. i like how your story will make people realise that being a lesbian is normal and how your life is just that….normal. well done sweets , good luck in your life x x x x

  42. your daughter is amazing for opening up and sharing her story. she is an inspiration to all them girls that are worried about telling their parents x
