SMS: Text Messaging Gets Redesigned (Photo credit: pouwerkerk)

My husband carries his phone with him wherever he goes, no longer do we pick up the land line phone, to be honest I am not even sure when it was last used, as we both seem to text rather than phone. With great pay as you go sim card rates or contract offers, we have free minutes to use up on our mobiles.

Do Mobiles Make Us Ignorant?

His phone is a rather posh one, a touch screen design, while mine is dated back to the 1960s I think, more of a brick.

He uses his phone for everything possible, there seems to be an ap for everything these days, even the kids have their own ap folder.

He does annoy me when we are sat chatting, out for a family day or even watching a film, to find his fingers rapidly moving across the screen as he types out text after text. Could he not just phone the friend he is texting and get the conversation out the way and then put it down?

It does annoy me and all manners seem to be lost due to mobile phones.

If we had guests and the house phone rang, he would check the ID caller display and if not important would leave it and ring back later, but if it was his mobile, chances are he would answer it, are mobiles more personal to us?

“According to Yahoo News – In the 12 weeks up to 22 January 2012, smartphones made up 71.4% of all mobile phone sales in the UK. A recent survey of 2,000 smartphone owners by mobile phone website Recombu.com showed that more than 68% would answer their phone during a dinner date, with 14% freely admitting they’d answer even if they knew the call wasn’t important.”

Are mobiles a benefit to relationships, making it easier to keep in touch on the go? I have to admit I am not a fan of texts and could never write out essays, my replies are rather 2 to 3 words at the most, I would much rather have a conversation.

We have also argued at times when text messages have been misinterpreted or predictive text has confused me.

I have even checked his mobile in the past, wondering who it is that he is forever texting, do males actually talk that much? It has always been his male friends but when in the same room, they struggle with small talk, yet can text all day long.

  1. Mobile phones are demonic!
Dont get me wrong i would be lost without mine but man its evil!
I text more than anything as i cba to talk a lot, even if i wanted too with a child in my ear every five seconds basic spoken words are near impossible. I text swear a lot when im mad. Always tellinh my oh via text hes a knob when he is because its braver than doing it in person. Im a text warrior haha.
I dont have lots of apps, mostly cause my phones a fan of force closing every five secs, but i get on fb with it and play one game i like, have nhs direct on speed dial and google to see if im dying or why my kids turned purple lol.
I hate my phone but love its uses when it works.

Route of all evil! I’m addicted to mine and it’s affecting the whole house, Rob thinks I’ve lost interest in him and it’s making him depressed. If I don’t touch my phone for a while I get agitated, could I be missing something? Maybe someone needs me. I’d love to know how to stop!

Mobiles are a great way for us to keep in contact with others when on the go – whole point of them right?! But they can too be a right royal pain in the ass! So many times I’ve heard people say “my mobiles dying we best hurryup” :-S really? Is it that bad to be without your mobile while out in town for just a short while? Your phone probably has an answer phone or wow guess what they could even text you or try again later. “What if theres an emergency” I hear alot too, well in the ‘olden days’ it’d be tough sodding luck! I’m 21 and if I go out without my phone oh well nevermind, unless I’m out without my kids in which case I would go back for it. I hate being ina room with others who’d prefer to sit and text than talk to others in the room – annoyinggg!

Very rare I use my mobile for calls or texts. I use it more for the Internet and keeping lo entertained for 5 mins. It drives me nuts when your trying to have a face to face convocation with some one and they start texting

  5. Jade Trotter says:

I can safely say I’m addicted to mine. I do think that sometimes it makes us ignorant, but if someone is talking to me or I’m in a group I only really look at my phone if I REALLY need to. My oh drives me MAD with his bloody phone constantly at it tap tap tapping away x

  6. Jade Tynan says:

I used to always be on my phone as so did my oh. It got to the point that we would go out for dinner but he would spend all night on his phone and only say about 3 words to each other. When we realised this we said we wouldn’t use our phones unless important when he gets home from work ad now at weekends and when we go out etc he never brings his. But yes they are EVIL xx

  7. Yeah he does sit there and whine if I’m on the group on my phone… That may be a bit ignorant on my part… But the phones so handy and nearby. Mine even has a name: nIgel. (in fact this is nIgel 5) I use my phone for EVERYTHING. Even a torch. It’s a part of my life. I love him we’ve been together longer than me and the oh… X

  8. CollaredSlave says:

i think they can make you ignorant, but they are also very useful! me n hubby have a night each week where we turn the mobiles off and just spend time with each other! x

  9. there have been plenty of times when ive wanted to throw mobiles in the bin

  10. I have to admit I’m addicted to my phone. I’ve woken up in the middle of the night scrolling through facebook on my phone, if I wake up in the night n can’t find my phone I panic and have to find it. Even when I’m talking to people I’ll realise I’m txting/messaging and think oh shit that’s rude. I just can’t seem to help myself lmao. I think I’ve got a serious issue…

  11. Mummy_LaLa says:

TBH the only time I really use my phone is to make and recive calls or send an recive texts. Occasionally I will pop on to facebook or twitter to see what people are up too if I am out and about. Other than that my phone is either laying about the house or in my pocket. IMO phones and laptops are evil! They destroy lives and relationships because people over use them.

  12. i’m bad 4 this ….. i can b out n be checking facebook all the time lol i would b lost if i didn’t have my fone to check fb or text lol i dont think its Ignorantounce its just how techolagy is going i’m affraid xx

  13. christina w says:

Yes i think they do :/ im stuck to mine and would be lost without it, my hands dont know what to do when its not in my hand. I do put it down if im chatting with someone and it annoys me when im midway through a convo and the other person will start messing with theirs or suddenly cut in with something theyve just read :/ ahh well there only getting more advanced so theres not much anybody can do about it haha x

  14. Kate Foley says:

I’m always in my fone but put it away when we have people over or we go to people’s house well depends who the company is lol x

  15. reanneandkaydismom says:
