I remember being afraid when one of my own babies seemed to sleep for most of the day. Why were they sleeping so much? Were they unwell? Were they getting enough milk inside them?
I would deliberately try to wake them up to change and feed them, lazy little things are babies and looking back I was very lucky that I had babies that did sleep, but the burning question on a new mums lips is how much should a baby sleep?
It is important to remember that babies need sleep and most, unlike mine will wake every 3-4 hours for a feed.
How Much Should A Baby Sleep?
A newborn will sleep 16 hours
One month will sleep 15 hours
Two months will sleep 15 hours
Three months will sleep 15hrs
Six months will sleep 14hrs
Nine months will sleep 14hrs
12 months will sleep 13hrs
(The above is an average after some research)
Once your baby is 12 weeks you will notice that your baby is starting to sleep for longer periods of time, a well-deserved rest for mum from the many night feeds. At around 12 weeks of age your baby may well surprise you and even sleep right through the night, if you’re lucky, although you’re looking at about 6 months for this to continue.
Also around the 12 weeks milestone it is the perfect time to start a bedtime routine and get your baby into a pattern, which will teach your baby the difference between night and day and a routine (which we will look at further in depth in another post) can make all the difference to a good night’s sleep.
Did your baby sleep for long periods? Did you ever wonder if your baby was sleeping too much?

My little girl slept through when she was 13 months but it didn’t last she is now 15 months and she is off and on. I would say to all parents, DO NOT worry if your baby doesn’t sleep through, Some babies NEVER sleep through i didn’t until i was 4! lol. I am now pregnant and I find when she sleeps through I’m more tired than when she wakes, So i really don’t mind
Wow Rose I am glad I am not your mum lol
She also had two other children one that was very ill too
I was a bad child!
So I bet now you at least know how she felt on no sleep
I was really lucky with my son, he slept through the night from birth until 2 weekday then one feed a night until 6weeks when he slept through again. It was all down to routine, he would only wake up to feed, have a nappy change and maybe 10mins x
Wow you were very lucky, a routine is a definite I believe and something I have done with all mine from around 12 weeks.
You’re more than welcome for the pic hun
Anyway, I was REALLY lucky with my lil girl, she slept through from birth (the night she was born she only woke up to scream at a baby that wouldn’t stop crying and went back to sleep) I always thought she’d be having too much sleep and not enough milk, but I said from beginning I won’t wake her to feed her if she’s hungry she’ll wake up. I was sick of people being told (many who weren’t even parents) that I *have* to wake her up to give her a feed, I think I did it once and she didn’t have any of it she just wanted to go back to sleep. My daughter put herself into her own routine too. Very lucky lol x
Another lucky mum I think the lack of sleep has to be the worst part of being a new mum. I agree its hard to know how they can sleep for so long and get enough milk inside them.
Everyone’s said I’m lucky, especially my mum, apparently I never shut up even in my sleep lol. It was harder cause she was breastfed to start off with for the first 2 weeks so had no idea how much she was having =/ lol x
Ah see Cameron was a little sod and I actually stopped breastfeeding after 6 weeks as he was on me every 1-2 hours, I just couldnt do it.
I only managed 2 weeks, asked my hv for advice got nothing and Savannah was the same, on for about an hour came downstairs and she’s be screaming after 10 minutes – it’s draining isn’t it? lol x
Whwn both my sons were born they were sleeping 6 hours on a night time even in hospital as I had to stay on for 2 nights with me having a section when I came home they used to wake once on a night for a little feed and back down untill morning then from about 5 weeks they were both sleeping 7 till 7 x
6 hours is a great routine too – see you had it easy lol
My eldest was always asleep it use to make me panic so I would poke her or put my face near hers to makesure she was still breathing lol but she only started to sleep through at the age of 3, my youngest has always slept through
ha ha Emily I think every mum does that, or put their ear close to babies mouth so we can check they are breathing.
All mine slept on their bellies from birth, all only woke once and slept thru by 6 mths
Oh see that would terrify me your very lucky too to get such good sleepers.
Grace would wake every 2 hours until she was put on hungry baby at 2 weeks (health visitors advice) Grace then would go every 3-4 hours once started on food grace on food she was alot better but didn’t sleep through until 20 months x
Aw I have heard the same from a few mums that hungrier baby milk was given due to baby just not filling up.
Reanne slept through from 4 weeks to 4 months 12 hours a night, kaydi atm sleeps 4 hours a time feeds then sleeps again..xx
4 hours is still really good isnt it x Makes all the difference when you get sleep x
Zach slept through from 7 weeks, it was a god send and I’m hoping Imogen will be the same although I’m doubting it very much. We’re already doing things to help teach between day and night, like at the minute I’m at my Mum’s so Imogen is sleeping in the pram, during the day she sleeps in the pram with nothing covering her, after 8PM we put a blanket over the pram to make things dark, to help teach her that it’s time to start sleeping longer, and she does sleep quite well from about 9, she sleeps for a good 5 and a half hours before waking again
Can some one please tell my son all this lol. At 3 weeks old he slept 12 hours a day and it has gone down since lol
Chloe is a brilliant sleeper. from 4 months she slept 10pm til 7am straight through, from 5 months she was sleeping 8pm to 8am straight through. i just think i’m very lucky with her! but she never sleeps much during the day. she just cat naps x
From 4 weeks old Ains slept 7-7 he’s always been an amazing sleeper he’s now 22 months & sleeps anything from 5 or 6 pm till between 7 & 9 am aswell as having sg 1 or 2hour nap during the day xx
Sidney didnt sleep through until he started soft soilds at 6 months and goodnight milk. He would wake every 2 hours even though we had a great routine he was just a really hungry baby. He wouldn’t settle unless sleeping on me also until he was 4 months old. He sleeps fine now though. 7:30-7:30 and a 30-60 minute nap a day. He did have a bit of a bad few weeks when we moved house at 7 months and then again when we moved at 12 months and put him into his own room but That only lasted a week. xx
i8 never knew that x
learn something new every day wow xx
Tyler has always been a great sleeper iv been very lucky! When he was first born and had an infection i remember the doctor had said didn’t i notice he was sleeping alot! I hadn’t know how much he should of been sleeping anyway! xx
My little boy hardly sleeps at all. His Very nosey. He sleeps about 7hours at night sometimes and then maybe 2-3 hours through the day sometimes he just has a few cat naps lasting 10-15mins! I was worried his not getting enough. I go out driving for hours so he gets more sleep some days. :-\ Xx
