As any mother knows, keeping your child safe in the sun is a big must. For those with fair skinned children, the battle is endless. My Charlie is ginger. VERY ginger, and he’s got the skin that goes with it. He will get burned even when the sun isn’t out properly. So what can we do to protect such children?
Yesterday we went to the beach. Temperature? 28oC!! It was boiling. And my ki9ds, being as they are, wanted to get straight in the water. So off they stripped and into their swimming nappies and costumes. Smothered in factor 50 plus suncream up to the eyeballs and looking like snowmen, hats plonked on their heads, off they went. Ten minutes later, worried mummy me grabs them out of the water and smothers Charlie again, and just tops Rhiannon up because she never burns, just browns. By this point neither will keep their hat on and Rhiannon’s is soaked where she threw it in the sea in protest at being removed for more suncream application.
My friend has so far put one lyer of suncream on both of her girls, but then they are covered head to toe in clothing. I’m not sure this was a good move as they were both soon complaining and sweating. I’m too busy stopping Charlie from frying to comment. The day was getting hotter and hotter and I keep luring the kids into the shade for a while in an effort to prevent sunstroke, alternating with throwing them in the sea followed by another smothering for Charlie and top ups for Rhiannon.
We didn’t leave the beach until half past 5 in the evening and the weather was still getting hotter although the wind was cooling. I spent the hour and fifteen minute journey home worryig that one or both (mainly Charlie) was going to be suffering from the sun. Suffice to say Rhiannon looked like she had been sunbathing in Spain and even Charlie has a rather becoming brown tint to his skin, but no burns. Well not on them anyway.
I, on the other hand, and singed rather badly on my back. Note to self, whilst worrying yourself over proteting your kids from the sun…don’t forget to protect yourself too.
And now, off to the park to do it all over again.

My little dude is very blonde. When it’s warm I’m all ways worried about him burning. He refuses to keep a hat on so I cover him in sun cream even putting it in his hair to protect his scalp
My daughter had quite dark hair when she was born but as she’s getting older she’s gradually getting lighter, she’s now at the point where’s she’s a very dirty blond. She refuses to keep a hat on so I do the one thing I can think of .. I put sun cream all over her, hair and everything. I’m hoping as she gets older she’ll be more willing to keep a hat on x
My eldest has his fathers Greek olive skin and looks like a native whenever we go abroad. The turks and greeks and cypriots love him. Harvey is more blond but still tans like a dream. I tan if I apply tanning oil. My youngest is like his father they’ve got that typical English rose skin where is never really tans just burns then goes back white. I put factor 50 on them all but by the end of week 1 the eldest two don’t need cream but I continue to apply it. I have to apply the youngest and his dads suntan lotion every twenty minutes. Handiest way to do this is to get spray Nivea. Not Garnier, this stuff stings like hell on sunburn. Boots soltan cream is really good as well and cheap x
O dear! Dont forget about you lol. I am blonde with fair skin and burn so quickly and worry Sidney will be like that even though he is slightly darker skinned than me. I smoother him in factor 50 every hour. He wont wear hats which is a pain so I have to rub it on his head too lol. I have the blue one so I can see where its gone to make sure i haven’t missed any. Sidney looks just like a smurf after i am done lol xx
I only have to look out the window if its sunny and i burn! Lol x
Trying to keep a hat on a child must be the hardest thing in the world xx
My girls are mixed race but still rather fair skinned considering this fact, I always make sure they’ve got a nice factor 50 on them! It’s not worth the risk of them burning and getting sunstroke either! I always try to make them both wear hats and glasses. I’m a pain for putting more sunlotion on when they’ve been in the water even though it’s waterproof stuff, can’t be too careful and better safe than sorry. Try to stay in the shade when it’s too hot but as mummys know trying to get a kid to do that is hard work so plenty of water and juice and lil snacks throughout the day! X
i’m lucky lewis is olived skinned like me so just browns but my other two r blonde n fair skinned so i try n protect them with suncream but getting it on their faces is a nightmare so i have to dab um as they run past me lol i also take loads of drinks out with us to help keep them hydrated xx
I must use so much sun cream ause it’s forever being put on even if it’s warm and the suns not out lol x
This is me all over I seem to chase Kai around with the factor 50 yet I forgot to do myself ! X
im sooo bad at using sun creams, i never put any on myself, but i always make sure i cover every inch of jayden lol

i never tan and am fair skinned i look like a milk bottle lol so does my daughter with all the sun cream lol xx
I’m lucky neither myself or my kids have ever burned, but it definitely something to watch. x
