Does Your Bra Really Fit?

It used to be said that your foundation garments, i.e. your underwear, were more important than the clothes you wore on top. The fact is that well designed and well fitting underwear gives you a much better shape and this determines how well your outer garments might look. It is especially important that you wear a bra that fits you properly. Ill fitting bras, particularly for the most well endowed amongst us, not only look wrong, they can be extremely uncomfortable. The fact is that buying a bra isn’t like buying any other item of clothing or underwear. Buying a bra is not like a pair of gloves where you know your size and can feel fairly confident that the gloves will fit you.

It’s Not Just the Cup Size

When you go to buy a new bra, knowing your cup size is a good start, but that’s not the end of the matter, not everyone fits into an a, b, c or d cup. The only way to ensure that you have a well fitting bra is to buy from a specialist supplier or from a large department store that offers a measurement and fitting service. You might think that you need a 34 b cup, because that is what you have worn for years, but if you have put on (or lost) weight in the meantime, that cup size might not be as comfortable as it once was.

It’s all too easy to blame the manufacturers when a bra does not fit but the fact is you shouldn’t assume that your bra size is a static thing that remains the same year in and year out. The fact is that our bodies are changing all the time – take a pregnant mother for instance, her bra size could increase considerably when she is pregnant, and remain so if she is breast feeding. Pregnant and nursing women in particular, need a bra that fits them properly and gives them the support that they need. As any nursing mother will tell you, an ill fitting bra can be extremely uncomfortable and may even restrict her milk flow.

All That Glitters

That brightly coloured, up to the minute shift dress that you drooled over when your friend wore it, may not look the same on you if you have not paid due care and attention to your underwear. You may be one of those women who are a bit shy about asking whether a store offers a bra fitting and measurement service, but you should know that people are used to these sorts of questions. The women who measure you and find the bra that offers the best fit are professionals, helping women like you is something they do every day. If you want that dress to look as good on you as it did on your friend then you need to ensure that your bra fits well. No matter how attractive a dress or top might be, if the clothes underneath it do not fit properly, then the garment will not look as it should.
