My kids certainly have a better social life than me, Cameron attends football coaching, Casey does varius after school clubs and Nakita regularly visits the YMCA. The newest classes being held for children are pole dancing ones.
The Mail Online headline reads:
Outrage as girls as young as SEVEN are given pole dancing lessons – and pictures are posted on gym’s Facebook page.
One mother, who asked not to be named, said: ‘This concerns me greatly as I would not want my 13-year-old wandering round in hotpants and hanging upside down.
‘They advertise as being aerobics/gymnastics with a pole but if you see the pictures, you will see this is not the case. These pictures are also being posted across Facebook and this just invites child grooming.’
A dance teacher, who also wished to remain anonymous, added: ‘I think there has got to be a line that should not be crossed with children.
Is pole dancing a sexual activity or a great form of exercise ? To be honest I would not be too keen on Casey my 8 year old having lessons in pole dancing, would I think different if she were 15/16 then yes maybe. I have a good friend who is a pole dancer, I am sure she will be along to comment her herself. I understand it is an art, I mean how the hell do you even stay holding onto a metal pole dangling upside down I will never know. I think friction burns would be too painful for me to even try.
I can see why the Facebook pictures have caused concern and the Gym should have requested the parents full permission to use pictures of their children online.
Do I agree a 7 year girl should be having pole dancing lessons? I don’t honestly know. I did gymnastics for 7/8 years, 2 years at county level, I dressed in leotards from the age of 5/6 to the age of 13/14. I paraded in front of audiences with my gymnast moves, is pole dancing gymnasts, I believe you have to be fit and determined to work hard to learn routines, so yes in a way it is a good active sport. I guess the stereotype of pole dancing is some sleazy back street bar with ladies parading their bits so dirty old men stuff notes into their thongs ….

I think it’s all about context. Is pole dancing an athletic activity like gymnastics? Sure. But it’s associated with taking off your clothes for money, or at the very least, ADULT entertainment. I can’t believe that a) parents are letting their daughters do this and b) the gym even offers it for minors.
When I clicked on the title of this headline, I thought surely it was a joke or not what I thought.

well it all depends. are these girls fdoing it for exercise and a fun time or are they learning it for a tottaly different reason..? if its for exercise i say why not.. if its for any other reasons than no. x
I think this is disgusting! I for one won’t be letting my daughters (when I have them) have pole dancing lessons at 7! NO WAY! x
if I had a girl their would be no way she would be pole dancing at 7 and oh would defo say no xx
i dont think id like any child of mind doing it that early if im honest.. i know there still young and wouldnt even think about it being “sexual” but the idea doesnt seem right to me x

As long as the kids are getting lessons for the right reasons then there should be no problem. Such an activity does not have to be erotic.
I would hate for my daughter to do that – at the age of 7.
