8 year old found hanged while watching The Last Samurai.

Do we know what our kids are watching?

I was saddened to read in The Sun newspaper of the little boy who was found hanged after watching a violent film based upon a Japanese suicide ritual. The films certificate is of the age 15.

A CORONER warned of the dangers of violent films yesterday after an eight-year-old boy was found hanged while watching The Last Samurai.

Lewis McGlynn was discovered hanging in his bedroom by his father John in January.

The 15 certificate film contains references to a Japanese suicide ritual.

Coroner Edward Thomas said: “He may well have been doing some of the things he might have seen in videos. It’s important kids watch what is suitable for their age.”

The inquest in Hatfield, Herts, heard Lewis would often stay up late in his bedroom watching DVDs as he was hyperactive and had difficulty sleeping.

A post mortem revealed that Lewis, of Welwyn Garden City, Herts, died as the result of a ligature to the neck.

Verdict: Accident. Source

  10. Robin i’m so sorry for your loss…….i agree you can’t always believe what you read! They sensationalize so much! That said there have been cases where films have influenced children to do things they wouldn’t normally do i.e Jamie Bulgers killers(hate even using them in the same comment as this i am so sorry)…….+we do as parents need to be vigilant of what our children see!I’m maybe not as careful as i should be+i hold my hands up to that!I won’t let her watch violence, sex, gore or anything with heavy swearing…….i wouldn’t even watch the riots when she was up+about!Again Robyn i’m so sorry!

  31. Why the hell was a 8 year old watching a violent 15 rated film in the first place?
    RIP

    • Only just saw the reply that states the boy wasn’t watching said film so I would suggest taking some legal advice because the paper (suprise suprise a murdoch owned one) would then need to prove where the info came from. x

  32. poor little boy. that film is certainly not suitible for an 8 year old, it talks of suicide being honourable so maybe he misinterpreted it >
